In what order should you carry out renovation work?

Resources · 4 min read

Renovating out of order means risking damage to what you've just finished. Here's the logical sequence for renovating a flat.

1. Demolition and structural work

Start with whatever makes dust and rubble: strip-out, demolishing partitions, structural changes.

2. Electrics and plumbing

The services (chasing, running conduits) come before closing up the walls and finishing.

3. Plastering and preparation

Partitions, false ceilings, coatings and skimming: you prepare flat, sound surfaces ready to take the finish.

4. Painting, then the floors

You generally paint before laying the final floor covering (or at least the first coat) to avoid splashes. Skirting boards and wood finishes are done in coordination with the floors.

5. Cleaning and handover

Finally, the end-of-job clean and a check of every finish with you.
