Painting straight over wallpaper looks tempting as a time-saver. It's sometimes possible, but often inadvisable. Here's how to decide.
When it's an option
- The paper is intact, well stuck down, with no peeling or blistering
- It has no pronounced texture or dark pattern that would show through
- It isn't vinyl or plastic-coated (paint won't grip)
The risks
Water-based paint can soften the adhesive and cause peeling or bubbles. Seams and patterns can stay visible, and the result is often less durable.
Why stripping is better
Removing the paper, then preparing and skimming the surface, gives a sound base and a flawless finish that lasts. It's the solution we recommend in most cases.

Frequently asked questions
Can you paint over vinyl wallpaper?
No: paint doesn't adhere properly to a plastic-coated surface. Better to strip it off.
How do I know if my wallpaper is holding?
Test the corners and seams: if they lift, the paper should be removed before painting.
